Visual Cultures of Insurgency in the Colonial Andes

Presented by Ananda Cohen-Aponte, an assistant professor of history of art at Cornell University. Hosted by HIA.

Jan 16, 2018
from 12:00 PM to 02:00 PM

3201 Hart Hall

Dr. Cohen-Aponte's research focuses on the visual culture of colonial Latin America. Her recent book, Heaven, Hell, and Everything in Between: Murals of the Colonial Andes (University of Texas Press, 2016) explores the intersections between art, politics, religion, and society in mural paintings located in colonial churches across the southern Andes. She is conducting research on a new project that explores the role of the visual arts in fomenting an insurgent imaginary in late 18th-century Peru and Bolivia within a context of inter-ethnic conflict and rebellion.
